The Birth of Asa

Sweet baby Asa will be THREE weeks old this week!  Wow, what a crazy adventure these first three weeks have proved to be.

Asa's birth was a scheduled c-section. The date and time was set for November 20th at 8am. It was nice because my mom made arrangements to be here to take care of Jude and Eden while I was in the hospital (We planned for 4 nights, because that's how long I had to stay with Eden), then my grandma and sister were to arrive to help me at home for the next 4 nights, then Michael was out of school for 5 days in a row for Thanksgiving break, then my mother-in-law took two weeks off of work to help with the kids as well! So thankful that so many people were willing to help out! I have always heard the transition to three children was the hardest, so we wanted to be prepared, for the first few weeks at least!

One last belly look, the night before my c-section!

The morning of November 20th, Michael and I arrived at the hospital at 5am and I got all prepped for the surgery.  When they hooked me up to the monitors, the nurse asked if I could feel the contractions. I knew I had been in pain the last couple weeks, but I wasn't sure if it was contractions since I never had any with my other two pregnancies.

Anyways, Michael's Aunt works as a post-pardum nurse and was also going to be allowed to be in the room for the c-section. She was going to make sure everything stayed under control, since my last birth at this same hospital with Jude was quite terrifying.

Everything went smoothly as planned, I headed back into the operating room at 8:00 and the recorded time of his birth was 8:28am. He was a big boy: weight 8lbs 5ozs (almost a pound heavier than both of my other kids) But he looked identical to Jude, and Eden.

What a chubby boy!

I feel like for Asa's birth I was more aware of the miracle that was taking place. I remember praising God for giving us this little life the second I heard him cry.

The kids were allowed to come into the recovery room to see Asa for a few minutes, but I started feeling sick, so they went ahead and left.

The first day in the hospital is a bit of a blur. Because I was very nauseous after the c-section and couldn't stop vomiting, I was given medicine that knocked me out. I barely remember who came to visit us that first day. I do remember I wasn't in much pain and Michael helped me out of bed that night. (The previous c-section I didn't get out of bed until end of day 2)

The second day, I seemed to be fine and walking all around the room. Michael left that morning for a doctor appointment he had scheduled and left me alone while the baby was getting circumcised. The kids came up again that afternoon and I was able to get a few pictures of their first time really getting to touch and kiss Asa. It is so sweet to see how they instantly love their little brother!

The next morning when the Dr made his rounds at 7am, he said I was doing so well, I could go home! I was shocked and so excited. We were home by lunch on Saturday!

While Asa's birth and first hospital stay seemed to be ideal, the next week proved to be anything but that!

I remember taking the picture above on our first day home and posting it to Facebook, saying "I already have everything I want for Christmas this year!" We really take for granted how quickly life can change in an instant! We were really made aware of how fragile and quick life can be the very next week!
