A Week of Potty Training

Could Mission: Potty Training be COMPLETE?!

Last week I attempted to successfully potty train Jude in just three short long days! One of my fiends used the three day potty training method with such great results, I decided to try it myself. Let me just say, that I have never attempted to potty train Jude before Tuesday. This was his first time being made to do his business on the potty. On Tuesday morning we threw away his diaper and he has not been in one since! With this method, you need to stay at home for three full days and nights. (And believe me, you would not want to go anywhere with a little peeing rascal!) It says your child should be at least 22 months (Jude is just a few weeks shy). And basically you need to be their shadow for the next few days, constantly letting them drink, then rushing them to the toilet each time you notice them starting to pee or poop.

Day One: We put on a pair of one of his cool new undies. However, they did not stay one long! Jude went through at least 20 pairs of underwear and not a single drop in the potty! The only bright side is that he did stay dry through his three hour nap! He was happy to wear big boy underwear and did not want to put back on a diaper (I did try to give up). He does look so cute and older in his undies!

I did quickly find out the playing outside was a bad idea! He would just empty his bladder out and want to continue playing. He would scream as I carried him inside to get him cleaned up!

We finally made it to 8:00 and decided it was bed time! I reluctantly laid him down in just his underwear and a t-shirt, praying it would not be a horrible night because mommy needed some rest!

Day Two: If you thought day one was bad, day two was way worse! He did sleep until 7:30 and woke up dry! As soon as I got him up, I put him on the toilet but he would not go. Luckily it was raining outside so I did not have to fight that battle as well!

He did finally go on the toilet at 9:00 and was so excited yelling "Bye bye pee pee!" He was able to go four times on the potty, once where he completely emptied his bladder.

He took a three hour nap and woke up dry as well. Thank goodness they both take an afternoon nap around the same time because I was able to get a quick break and shower before the madness would start again!

I really don't know why day two so bad, but it was very physically and emotionally exhausting!  Jude was constantly screaming and crying and peeing everywhere! And I totally feel like I was neglecting Eden because I was running around after Jude all day, I hardly found time to nurse her! Thank goodness for the swing, exersaucer and bouncy seat!

Here is Jude getting a few m&m's after he went pee pee on the potty! He was so excited! ....and so was I!!!

We put Jude to bed around 9:00 in just his undies and a shirt.

Day Three: Hallelujah it couldn't get much better. He woke up around 9:00 dry and did not have one pee accident!  He went to the bathroom after breakfast, lunch, and his afternoon snack (following his three hour nap) and after dinner with no accidents in between! He did partially go poop in his underwear but ran to the bathroom to finish going on the potty.

Day Four: He slept until 10 and woke up dry. But we took a few steps backwards on this day. Jude did not want to sit on the potty. I would have to pop his leg and make him sit down, then he would immediately do his business. I decided I did not want him to feel like sitting on the potty was punishment or that he was going to get in trouble if he didn't make it to the bath room. So on day four I did not make him sit on the potty at all. I would take him to the bathroom if he started to go, and constantly ask him to tell me if he needed to go. I wanted him to willingly want to sit on the toilet.

We did have a few accidents on this day, but he stayed dry through his nap.

Day Five: Jude slept through the night fine and had no accidents all morning. That afternoon we had friends over and played outside for a while. Jude had a few accidents mostly because he did not want to stop playing and come inside to pee.

Day Six: He woke up at 5:00am yelling for mommy and needed to go pee. I took him to the bathroom, then laid him right back down and he slept until a little after 10. No accidents all day and he would run up to us and tell us he needed to go poo poo or pee pee.

Day Seven (today): Slept through the night fine. I went took him out of the house for the first time! He went pee right before we left and I took him to the bathroom twice in Target, but he would not go on the big potty. He did not use the bathroom the entire 3hrs we were gone, but went on the toilet immediately when we got home. He has had no accidents so far today.

So the three day potty training took us a few extra days, however Jude is not yet 22 months old like they suggested they should be. Still, I am very pleased with the results and the method we used. I feel like it is some sort of dream that my first baby is now not wearing diapers at all! I am happy and sad all at the same time!

If you are looking to potty train I would definitely suggest you buy and read the Three Day Potty Training ebook. Buying the book also allows you to have access to an online help desk where you can submit questions and get quick and helpful responses. I did not read the book until day three, and I feel like if I would have read it sooner, I would have started out doing things a little differently.

  2. Woohoo go Jude! Encouraging to hear!

Karis went in the potty for the first time couple weeks ago and wants to go often now! So we're working with her on potty training as we can but I'm not too sure with doing this method since Isaac is so little and nurses so often. Steve and I talked about working with her when he's home so if I'm nursing...he can help her! I'm actually really excited for her to be out of diapers!
